About Tunneler

Tunneler is a top-down action game released for MS-DOS in 1991. The game presents a competitive two-player experience viewed from a split-screen perspective, where each participant controls a vehicle underground.

Players each operate a drilling machine, tasked with navigating through subterranean earth to locate their opponent. The primary objective is to intercept and collide with the other player's vehicle. Progression is structured around real-time excavation, as players carve out personal tunnel networks within the shared playing field. A central gameplay system involves maze creation, where players can deliberately design their tunnels with dead ends and misleading pathways to confuse their rival. Another key system is based on observation and deduction, as the split-screen display allows both players to see the entirety of the opponent's digging activity in real time, though not their exact location until tunnels connect.

This visibility creates a strategic layer where discovering an opponent's tunnel system alerts them, granting them positional awareness. The player who has found the tunnel must then navigate its branching paths, often at a disadvantage, while the defender knows the intruder's general location within their own network. The game continues until one player successfully maneuvers into the other's vehicle, resulting in a collision.
