True Golf Classics: Waialae Country Club is one of those SNES golf games that actually feels like you're playing a round—if you ignore the fact that every golfer is inexplicably a dude. The Hawaiian course looks great for 16-bit, with those brutal bunkers and greens so fast your ball just won’t stop rolling unless you nail the power perfectly.

You start by tweaking your golfer’s stats—power, putting, recovery—which actually makes a difference when you’re lining up shots. I dumped most of my points into wind resistance because those ocean breezes will wreck your score if you’re not careful. The caddy system is neat, though half the time I ignored their advice and just went for the risky shot anyway.

Tournament mode’s solid, but the real fun is playing stroke matches against a friend. Just don’t blame me when you spend 10 minutes arguing over whether that putt actually lipped out or not. It’s an oddly specific golf sim that holds up way better than it should.
