Each town has a specialized economic function, and trading includes commodities as well as a slave labor force. Progression is driven by acquiring clues about the world's state and the Viking Union's potential role in the perpetual ice age.

Gameplay combines real-time management with strategic combat encounters. When the train contacts rival forces on the railway, the perspective shifts to a first-person combat interface where players engage in battles. Success in these encounters often depends on purchasing upgrades for the train's weapons and defenses. The core loop involves balancing trade for income and supplies, exploring the rail network for mission-critical intelligence, and fighting to survive against the Union's forces while pursuing the overarching goal of challenging their authority.
