About Toys
Toys came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, developed by Absolute Entertainment. It was one of those licensed titles from the era that tried to capture the feeling of a movie, in this case the 1992 film, on a cartridge. You see a lot of games like this on the SNES, attempts to translate a big screen adventure into the side scrolling and platforming language of the 16 bit console.
You control a miniature space ranger named Buzz Lightyear, navigating through a sprawling house from a toy's perspective. The main goal is to rescue your fellow toys from the clutches of the malevolent next door kid, Sid. You move screen by screen through areas like the bedroom and backyard, which function as large, interconnected levels. Your primary actions are running, jumping across furniture, and using your laser to pop balloons Sid has trapped your friends in. You also collect batteries to keep your laser powered; running out leaves you defenseless. The game has a deliberate pace, with careful platforming required, and the difficulty can be unforgiving with precise jumps and enemy patterns. Playing it feels like a slow, methodical crawl through a familiar environment made dangerous and large.
