About Tony Meola's Sidekicks Soccer
Tony Meola's Sidekicks Soccer came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, developed by Sculptured Software. It was one of many sports titles on the platform, but it stood out because it was officially endorsed by the U.S. national team's goalkeeper. The game used the SNES's Mode 7 graphics to create a pseudo-3D effect on the field.
You control a full soccer team, switching between players to pass, tackle, and shoot. The main goal is to score more goals than the opponent across various modes, including exhibition matches and longer league play. A signature feature is the camera that constantly rotates to follow the player with the ball, which can be disorienting but keeps the action focused. You can choose from many national and club teams, and progress is saved using passwords. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty feels challenging without being unfair. It feels like a fast, technical match where positioning and quick passes are key to winning.
