In the expansion's campaign, players command their faction across nine new missions set on six different continents. Each mission map is designed to resemble a real-world geographical region and is notably large in scale, featuring a distinct climate that influences the environment. Objectives involve engaging rival factions, such as confronting Viking forces on the snowy terrain of Greenland or battling native groups across the mixed desert and grassland regions of Africa. Progression is mission-based, requiring players to manage resource gathering, construction, and military units to achieve specific strategic goals set within each scenario.

Beyond the campaign, The Settlers II: Mission CD introduces twelve new maps for the game's free play mode, offering additional scenarios for skirmish-style gameplay.
