About The Pagemaster
The Pagemaster came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994, developed by Probe Entertainment. It was one of many licensed games from that period, based on the animated film about a boy who gets lost in a magical library. On the SNES, it joined a crowded field of side-scrolling platformers, each trying to capture a bit of that cinematic magic in 16-bit form.
You control Richard Tyler, a cautious boy who must navigate through three distinct worlds based on literary genres: Adventure, Horror, and Fantasy. Your main goal is to find the missing pages of a magical book to escape the library. The gameplay involves screen by screen exploration, where you jump across platforms, avoid environmental hazards, and use a slingshot to defeat enemies like living books and animated brooms. You also collect gold stars to unlock new areas and health-restoring bookmarks. The pacing is methodical, with some tricky jumps and enemy placements that can make it challenging. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes unforgiving, trip through a storybook where every wrong step has a consequence.
