Man, The Great Battle IV on SNES is one of those weird, chaotic side-scrollers that just shouldn’t work—but somehow does. You’ve got this mashup of characters from different Bandai franchises (Gundam, Kamen Rider, Ultraman) all thrown together, and it’s as ridiculous as it sounds. One minute you’re punching robots as Ultraman, the next you’re piloting a Gundam through a shoot-em-up section. The controls are a little stiff by today’s standards, but once you get used to it, there’s something oddly satisfying about the clunky combat.
The pixel art is pure 90s charm, especially the explosions and boss fights. And yeah, the story’s basically nonsense—something about saving the world from an evil empire—but who cares when you’re switching between a giant superhero and a mech mid-level? Just don’t expect anything deep. It’s the kind of game you play with a friend, laughing at how over-the-top everything is. If you dig weird retro crossovers, this one’s a trip.
