Okay, so The Flintstones: The Treasure of Sierra Madrock is one of those SNES games that looks way better than it has any right to. You start off as Fred, obviously, smacking stuff with his club in classic side-scrolling fashion—except everything’s got that chunky, colorful 90s cartoon vibe. The first level’s all Bedrock suburbs, but then suddenly you’re jumping over pterodactyls and dodging cavemen who apparently didn’t get the memo about the Stone Age being over.
The music’s weirdly catchy, like someone remixed the Flintstones theme into something you’d hum while doing chores. And the controls? Surprisingly tight for a licensed game. You’ll do the usual running and jumping, but there’s also this weirdly satisfying mechanic where Fred can chuck rocks like a prehistoric baseball pitcher. Miss the timing, though, and you’re getting nibbled by a tiny dinosaur. Again.
It’s not the hardest platformer out there, but some of those secret areas take actual brainpower to find—like, who hides a bonus level behind a waterfall of lava? (Spoiler: this game does.) If you grew up with the cartoon or just dig retro platformers with personality, it’s a solid time. Just don’t blame me when you start yelling "Yabba Dabba Doo" at your cat.
