If you're into chess and still have a Super Nintendo kicking around, The Chessmaster is one of those games that just feels right. It's not flashy—just a clean, no-nonsense chess sim with a solid AI that actually makes you think. The first time I booted it up, I figured I'd breeze through the lower difficulties, but nope, it humbled me real quick.
What I like is how it doesn't overcomplicate things. You get different board styles (wooden chess set forever), adjustable difficulty, and even some tutorials if you're rusty. The AI's got personality too—sometimes it feels like it's toying with you before dropping a brutal checkmate. And yeah, the music's just this chill background hum that keeps you focused.
It's not the fanciest chess game out there, but for SNES? It holds up way better than it has any right to. Just don't blame me when you lose three hours to "one more match."
