In the game, players assume command of either the Allied forces, comprising British, French, and Turkish units, or the Russian army. The primary objective is to achieve military victory by directing troops across the battlefield. Players issue orders in one of two command modes: Unit Mode for directing individual regiments, or Group Mode for coordinating up to eight units simultaneously. On-screen units are depicted as animated miniature soldiers that can be organized into various tactical formations, including lines, columns, and squares, to adapt to different combat situations. Progression is determined by the real-time unfolding of the historical engagement, with players managing troop movements and formations in response to enemy actions.
