About Tetris Battle Gaiden (japan)
I first played Tetris Battle Gaiden on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993. It was a Japan exclusive release from Bullet Proof Software, arriving at a time when the SNES library was full of inventive takes on established formulas. This game took the familiar Tetris concept and turned it into a direct, head to head competition.
You control one of several wizards, each with a unique special ability, and your goal is to be the last one standing. You still clear lines by rotating and dropping the tetrominoes, but you are also attacking your opponent's screen. You can send garbage blocks over to them, and you can activate spells that might freeze their pieces, flip their screen, or speed up their descent. The pacing is frantic, as you are constantly managing your own stack while reacting to the chaos your opponent creates. It feels like a magical duel fought with falling blocks.
