Tales of Phantasia came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995 from Namco. It was a late release for the system, pushing the hardware with its detailed visuals and a fully voiced opening, which felt ambitious at the time.

You control Cless Alvein, a young swordsman whose village is destroyed, setting him on a quest for revenge that quickly expands into a fight to save the world's mana. The game mixes traditional screen by screen world exploration with a unique real time battle system called the Linear Motion Battle System. Instead of turn based menus, you directly control Cless, running around the battlefield to attack with your sword, use special Artes, or coordinate with your party members who are controlled by the AI. You'll travel across continents, delve into dungeons, and even journey through time to gather the power needed to defeat the sorcerer king Dhaos. The pacing can be deliberate, with some challenging difficulty spikes in the later dungeons that require careful management of your resources. Playing it feels like being part of an active, sprawling adventure where your direct input in combat keeps you constantly engaged.
