About Taikyoku Igo - Idaten (japan)
Taikyoku Igo - Idaten came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, published by Bullet-Proof Software. It was one of many Japanese strategy titles that never left the country, appearing late in the SNES lifecycle when developers were pushing the hardware with more complex games.
You play as a go master navigating a fantasy world, challenging a series of computer opponents in traditional board matches. Your main goal is to defeat increasingly skilled AI by controlling territory on the grid, but the game layers this with RPG exploration. Between matches, you move your character across an overworld map, entering towns to find new challengers and gathering power-ups that subtly influence your stone placement. The pacing is deliberate, demanding careful reading of the board state for each move, and the difficulty escalates sharply. It feels like a quiet test of patience where every decision carries weight.
