Super Valis IV on SNES is one of those games that looks gorgeous the second you boot it up—bright colors, detailed sprites, and that classic Valis anime aesthetic. You play as Lena, who swings this massive sword like it weighs nothing while jumping between floating platforms and dodging enemy fire. The controls feel tight, though some of the later levels get brutal with their enemy placement.
If you’ve played the other Valis games, you’ll recognize the mix of platforming and slashing, but this one throws in some new magic attacks that actually feel useful (unlike in III, where half the spells were situational at best). The music’s got that early ‘90s synth-rock vibe—catchy, but not so repetitive that it grates after a few stages.
It’s not the hardest game in the series, but there’s a satisfying rhythm to clearing rooms and figuring out enemy patterns. Just don’t expect a walk in the park—some of those mid-bosses will wreck you if you rush in blindly.
