Super Valis - Akaki Tsuki No Otome is one of those weird, moody SNES action-platformers that never made it outside Japan. You play as this sword-wielding girl in a gothic fantasy world, slashing through demons and floating castles with this oddly floaty jump that takes some getting used to. The atmosphere’s the real star here—lots of deep reds and purples, eerie music, and these creepy cutscenes that feel straight out of a 90s anime OVA.
It’s not the tightest controls-wise (expect some cheap hits), but there’s something weirdly charming about how committed it is to its dark fantasy vibe. The bosses are huge, screen-filling monstrosities, and some stages have this cool day-night cycle that actually changes enemy behavior. If you’re into obscure action games with style to spare, it’s a neat time capsule.
