Super Tsume Shougi 1000 is one of those deep-cut SNES shogi (Japanese chess) games that’ll either hook you immediately or make you realize you’ve got a lot to learn. It’s all about solving 1,000 checkmate puzzles—some start simple, but by puzzle 50, you’re staring at the board for 10 minutes straight trying to see three moves ahead.

The interface is pure 90s Japan: minimal, no hand-holding, just you and the grid. I kept accidentally moving pieces the wrong way at first because the controls take a second to click. But once it does, there’s something satisfying about the *click* sound when you drop a piece into the right spot.

If you’re into shogi or just love brutal logic puzzles, this one’s a time capsule worth digging into. Just don’t expect any flashy animations or tutorials to save you.
