About Super Slapshot
I picked up Super Slapshot for the Super Nintendo back in 1993, a game published by Virgin Interactive. It was one of many sports titles on the system, arriving during a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate the speed and physicality of hockey into a 16-bit experience. It had to compete with other hockey games, and it carved out its own space with a particular focus on arcade style action.
You control a five man hockey team, switching between players to pass the puck and take shots on goal. The main objective is straightforward: outscore the opposing team within three periods. Its signature mechanics include a turbo boost for a temporary burst of speed, which drains a meter, and the ability to execute body checks to separate opponents from the puck. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the computer opponents provide a decent challenge, especially on higher difficulty settings where they capitalize on mistakes more effectively. It feels like a fast, physical arcade interpretation of hockey where a well timed check can be as satisfying as scoring a goal.
