Super Slapshot on SNES is one of those hockey games that nails the chaotic energy of the sport without overcomplicating things. Within seconds of dropping into a match, you're slamming opponents into the boards, taking wild slapshots that either soar past the goalie or ricochet off the crossbar with that satisfying ping. The controls are dead simple—pass, shoot, check—but there's a weirdly deep rhythm to it once you get going.
Playing against a friend is where it really shines. The AI isn't bad, but nothing beats the sheer pettiness of body-checking your buddy right as they line up the perfect shot. The pixelated crowds even boo you if you play too dirty, which is a nice touch. It's not the most realistic hockey sim out there, but who cares when you're pulling off ridiculous no-look goals and laughing at the goofy victory animations?
If you've got an SNES and even a passing interest in hockey, this one's a no-brainer. Just don't blame me when you start trash-talking like it's Game 7 of the Stanley Cup.
