Super R-Type was one of those SNES launch titles that made you feel like you'd brought the arcade home—if your home had a slightly choppier frame rate. It's Irem's classic side-scrolling shooter, but now you're blasting through alien hordes on your couch instead of feeding quarters into a machine.
The first thing you'll notice? Those creepy organic levels where everything looks like it's made of pulsating flesh and weird biomechanical nightmares. And yeah, the slowdown when things get hectic is real, but honestly, it kinda helps when you're dodging a wall of bullets. Just don't expect it to feel as smooth as the arcade original.
Still, nailing that perfect run with the Force Pod (that little drone thing that sticks to your ship) feels so good when you finally get the hang of it. The game doesn't go easy on you, though—some of those later stages are brutal. If you're into classic shooters, this one's a must-try, warts and all.
