Super Nobunaga no Yabou is one of those deep, old-school SNES strategy games where you take control of feudal Japan’s warring clans—think Nobunaga Oda’s rise to power, but with way more troop movements and diplomacy than you’d expect. At first glance, it looks like a typical turn-based war sim, but there’s a surprising amount of depth here—recruiting generals, managing resources, even arranging marriages to secure alliances. The map’s huge, covering all of Japan, and battles play out in this weird mix of real-time and turn-based chaos.
It’s definitely not beginner-friendly—expect to fumble around for the first hour figuring out why your armies keep starving—but once it clicks, it’s weirdly addictive. The music’s got that classic SNES charm, too, all dramatic trumpets and tense drums. If you’re into historical strategy games and don’t mind some retro jank, this one’s a hidden gem. Just don’t expect the game to hold your hand.
