Super Nichibutsu Mahjong 4 is one of those deep-cut mahjong sims for the SNES that never made it outside Japan. If you're into traditional riichi mahjong, this one's got a surprisingly solid AI—way better than most of the half-baked Western releases from the era. The tiles have that chunky 16-bit charm, and the background music is weirdly relaxing, like you're in some tiny Tokyo parlor at 2 AM.
First few hands, you'll notice it doesn't hold your hand—no English menus, so you better know your kanji or have a translation guide handy. But once you're in, the gameplay's smooth, with just enough little animations to make discarding tiles feel satisfying. The CPU opponents actually bluff sometimes, which keeps things tense. Not for casuals, but if you're deep into mahjong, it's a hidden gem.
