Super Nichibutsu Mahjong 3 is one of those classic Japanese mahjong games for the SNES that feels like stepping into a smoky 90s parlour. The Yoshimoto Gekijou edition throws in some quirky character cameos—think comedians and actors from the era—which gives it this weirdly nostalgic charm even if you don’t recognize them.
Gameplay’s straightforward if you know your riichi rules, but the AI doesn’t mess around. First hand I played, the CPU dropped a sneaky tsumo when I was one tile away from winning. The music’s got that tinny SNES synth thing going on, and the tile sounds are oddly satisfying, like plastic clicking on a table. Not the deepest mahjong sim out there, but it’s got personality.
Fair warning: unless you read Japanese or really know your hands, the menus might leave you poking buttons randomly. Still, it’s a solid time capsule for retro mahjong fans.
