Super Momotarou Dentetsu III is one of those classic Japanese board game hybrids that never made it West—which is a shame, because it’s weirdly addictive. You’re basically rolling dice to move around a map of Japan, buying up properties and trying to bankrupt the other players. The whole thing’s wrapped in this cheerful, cartoonish style with trains, little character sprites, and way too much kanji if you don’t read Japanese.
First few turns feel simple—just land on stations, pay up when someone owns them—but then the game starts throwing random events at you. One minute you’re collecting rent, the next you’re getting hit by a typhoon that wipes out half your cash. The AI can be brutal too, especially if you’re playing against the higher difficulty CPUs. It’s the kind of game where you’ll groan when someone lands on your prized Tokyo station, but cheer when you steal their entire railway line with a lucky card draw.
Definitely a niche pick, but if you’re into retro Japanese exclusives or just want something different from Monopoly, it’s got charm. Just keep a translation guide handy.
