Super Mario World Ultimate Mayhem 2.5 is one of those wild ROM hacks that takes the original game and cranks everything up to 11. You still recognize the classic Mario feel, but suddenly there are way more enemies, trickier jumps, and some seriously chaotic level designs. The first time I played, I got wrecked by a swarm of Hammer Bros in the very first level—definitely not your grandma’s Mario.

It’s got that nostalgic SNES look, but the difficulty is brutal in the best way. If you’ve ever thought vanilla Super Mario World was too easy, this’ll kick your butt in the most satisfying way possible. Just don’t throw your controller when you hit the third world.
