You control Mario, or sometimes Luigi, as you run, jump, and bounce off enemies across the landscapes of Dinosaur Land. The main goal is to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, which involves navigating side-scrolling levels, finding secret exits, and unlocking new paths on the world map. Key mechanics include using the spin jump to break blocks from below, riding the dinosaur Yoshi who can eat enemies and gain powers from certain shells, and discovering a network of hidden Star Road stages that warp you to different worlds. The pacing is generally brisk, with later castles and special stages presenting a significant challenge. Playing it feels like revisiting a familiar neighborhood where every house has been repainted in a unique, personal style.
