About Super Gussun Oyoyo (japan) (sample)

Super Gussun Oyoyo came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed by Irem. It was part of that wave of quirky Japanese puzzle games that never left the country, so you had to track down a ROM to try it. The title doesn't tell you much, but the box art shows these colorful, blocky characters, which gives you a hint about the kind of oddball experience you're in for.

You control a little round character, Gussun, navigating single-screen puzzle rooms. Your main goal is simply to reach the exit door in each stage. The signature mechanic is that you don't jump; you stretch your body upward like a spring to grab onto overhead blocks, then retract to pull them down and rearrange the level. You also use these blocks to build stairs, bridge gaps, and sometimes trigger switches. The pacing is methodical, almost slow, as you figure out the correct sequence of pulls, and the difficulty ramps up quickly with some genuinely tricky spatial reasoning. It feels like solving a quiet, physical brainteaser where every move needs to be deliberate.
