Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, developed and published by Capcom. It was part of that early wave of SNES games that showed off what the new hardware could do, with bigger sprites and more detailed backgrounds than what we were used to on the NES. The game continued the story of the knight Arthur from the earlier Ghosts 'N Goblins series, placing you right back into his armored boots for another round of supernatural hardship.

You control Arthur, a knight who runs, jumps, and attacks through a series of side scrolling levels filled with zombies, demons, and other monsters. Your main goal is to rescue the princess, who has been kidnapped once again, by fighting through haunted forests, sinking ships, and fiery castles. A key mechanic is your weapon; you start with a lance, but you can find others like a dagger or a crossbow by breaking open treasure chests scattered throughout the stages. Another signature element is your armor system. If you get hit, your fancy armor breaks, leaving you in your underwear and vulnerable to a second, fatal hit. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is steep, demanding precise jumps and quick reactions to enemy patterns. Playing it feels like a constant, tense struggle where every small victory is earned.
