Super Formation Soccer II is one of those SNES soccer games that feels rough around the edges at first—until you realize how much strategy actually goes into it. The pixelated players move in these weird, almost robotic animations, but once you get used to it, the formations and passing actually matter way more than in most arcade-y soccer games from that era.
You start by picking from a bunch of national teams (no licenses, so don’t expect real player names), and the controls take a minute to click. Slide tackles are weirdly satisfying, though, and the way the ball bounces off players has this janky physics charm. It’s not as flashy as International Superstar Soccer, but there’s something about the slower pace that makes every goal feel earned.
If you’re into retro sports games, this one’s a solid time capsule—just don’t expect it to play like modern soccer sims.
