Super Battletank 2 on SNES is one of those games that looks simple at first—just a little tank rolling around a desert—until you realize how much chaos you’re actually in charge of. You start off with basic armor and a machine gun, but after a few missions, you’re dodging missile barrages, calling in airstrikes, and desperately hunting for fuel before your tank grinds to a halt.
The top-down view makes it feel like you’re moving pieces on a war table, except everything’s exploding in real time. Enemy tanks pop up out of nowhere, sandstorms mess with your visibility, and sometimes you just have to floor it through a minefield because there’s no clean way around. The Gulf War setting gives it this weird mix of arcade action and slightly grim realism—like yeah, you’re blowing stuff up, but you also gotta manage ammo and repairs.
It’s not perfect—the controls take some getting used to, and later missions get brutal—but there’s something satisfying about slowly turning your clunky starter tank into a rolling death machine. If you ever played this back in the day, the pixelated explosions and that crunchy sound effect when your shells hit will hit you right in the nostalgia.
