Super Battletank: War in the Gulf is that classic SNES sequel to the NES original, and man, does it crank up the intensity. You're dropped right into the Gulf War with this chunky, pixelated tank, blasting through enemy forces across desert landscapes. The controls feel a little stiff at first—like you're wrestling with the D-pad—but once you get the hang of lining up shots while dodging return fire, it clicks.
What surprised me was how much strategy sneaks in. You’ve got different ammo types (AP shells for armor, HE for infantry), and running out of fuel or ammo is a real concern. The missions throw everything at you—night ops, sandstorms, even helicopter assaults. It’s not just mindless shooting, though the explosions are satisfyingly chunky. That SNES sound chip does work with the tank treads and cannon fire.
It’s definitely a product of its time, but if you’re into retro military sim-lite action, this one’s got grit. Just don’t expect a smooth ride.
