Starwing (or Star Fox, depending on where you're from) is one of those SNES games that still feels ahead of its time. You jump into an Arwing fighter as Fox McCloud, blasting through wireframe space levels that somehow made the SNES pull off 3D before it was cool. The first mission throws you right into it—dodging asteroids, weaving through enemy fire, and taking down monkey pilots (yeah, Andross really went all-in on the primate army).
The controls take a second to click—tilting up slows you down, which feels backwards at first—but once it does, barrel-rolling past missiles becomes second nature. The soundtrack’s got that classic SNES energy too, all punchy synths and adrenaline. Just don’t get too cocky; those later levels get brutal. It’s short but satisfying, especially if you go for the secret routes.
Fun fact: This version’s the European competition cart, so it’s got that weird "Super Weekend" mode where you’re basically speedrunning for high scores. A weird little slice of gaming history.
