I picked up Space Invaders: The Original Game for the Super Nintendo in 1997, a release from Taito that brought the arcade classic home. It was a time when many older arcade hits were being repackaged for 16-bit consoles, and this was one of them. You control a lone laser cannon that slides left and right along the bottom of the screen. Your objective is to destroy every alien in the descending formation before they reach the bottom or destroy your shields. The core mechanics are simple: you shoot the invaders, they shoot back, and you use the four destructible barriers for cover. The aliens move in a slow, rhythmic pattern that gradually speeds up as you eliminate more of them, increasing the tension with each passing second. The difficulty ramps up steadily, demanding quick reflexes and careful positioning to survive the later, faster waves. It feels like a tense, methodical battle against an ever-advancing clock.
