About Sonic Advance (j)(independent)
Sonic Advance came out for the Game Boy Advance, developed by Dimps and published by Sega. It arrived when Sega had stopped making consoles, so seeing Sonic on a Nintendo handheld felt like a significant shift. This was a deliberate return to the 2D side scrolling that defined the character's early years.
You control Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy, each with their own movement quirks, as you run through looping levels filled with ramps and enemies. The main goal is to get to the end of each act as quickly as possible, often racing against the clock while collecting rings for protection. Signature mechanics include the new trick system, which lets you perform flips after a jump to earn a quick speed boost, and the special stage, where you navigate a half pipe to collect Chaos Emeralds. The pacing is relentlessly fast, demanding quick reflexes to avoid bottomless pits and spiked obstacles. It feels like a constant, exhilarating rush from start to finish.
