About Sink Or Swim
I first came across Sink or Swim on the Super Nintendo in 1993, a release from Zeppelin Games. It was part of that wave of early 90s platformers that tried to stand out with a unique gimmick. You don't hear much about it now, but it had a certain charm that stuck with me.
You control a diver navigating a series of underwater and above-water stages. The main goal is simply to survive each level, collecting treasure while avoiding a host of sea creatures and environmental hazards. The signature mechanics are your limited air supply, which forces you to find air pockets before you drown, and the ability to switch between swimming and walking on the seafloor. The pacing is relentless; enemies spawn frequently and the oxygen meter depletes quickly, making for a tense experience. It feels like a constant, frantic race against your own breath.
