About Sim Earth
Sim Earth came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed by Maxis. It was part of that wave of simulation games on the SNES that tried to model complex systems, letting you manage things far bigger than a single city or ant farm.
In the game, you control the entire planet. Your main objective is to guide a world from its primordial beginnings, fostering life through various evolutionary stages until its civilization can achieve space travel. You directly manipulate the environment by raising or lowering terrain, adjusting the atmosphere, and placing different life forms. These actions cost energy, a finite resource you must manage carefully. The pacing is slow and deliberate, often feeling more like a long-term experiment than a typical game. You watch your decisions unfold over millions of simulated years, dealing with emergent crises like runaway greenhouse effects or mass extinctions. Playing it feels like conducting a grand, unpredictable planetary experiment.
