Sid Meier's Colonization is a turn-based strategy game released for MS-DOS in 1995. Developed and published by MicroProse Software, Inc., the game simulates the European colonization of the Americas from the 16th century through the late 18th century. It combines 4X and managerial gameplay elements, viewed from a top-down perspective, as players guide a colonial power in the New World.

Players begin with a ship and a small group of colonists, tasked with exploring an unknown coastline to establish a first settlement. As colonies expand, players manage their population by assigning colonists to specific roles such as lumberjacks, miners, farmers, or specialized craftsmen. These workers produce raw materials and manufactured goods, which function as the game's economic core. Goods can be sold in Europe for profit, traded with indigenous villages or rival European colonies, or used domestically to construct buildings and tools. Colony development involves constructing various buildings that enhance production, enable defense, or allow for the building of ships and artillery units.

Exploration reveals indigenous villages and points of interest, which can yield maps, train specialists, or contain hidden treasures, though some encounters carry risks. Defense is managed by equipping colonists to become military units like soldiers or dragoons, with experience gained through combat. A central political mechanic involves the generation of "Liberty Bells," which gradually increase colonial unrest against the European crown. As taxes rise, players can eventually choose to declare independence, triggering a war where they must defend their colonies from royal expeditionary forces to achieve final victory.
