About Shougi Saikyou
Shougi Saikyou came out in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Magical Company. It was one of many Japanese strategy titles released in that era, a time when the SNES library was deep with games you had to import to play. This one was squarely for the dedicated shogi enthusiast.
You control a single shogi piece, moving it across a board that functions like a small battlefield. The main objective is to capture your opponent's king, but the game layers this with mechanics like piece promotion, which changes a unit's movement capabilities after it crosses into enemy territory, and the ability to drop captured pieces back onto the board as your own. The pacing is methodical, demanding careful planning several moves ahead, and the computer opponents provide a stiff challenge. Playing it feels like a tense, cerebral duel where a single misstep can unravel your entire position.
