About Shougi Mahjong
Shougi Mahjong came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, developed by Hect. It was part of that early wave of SNES titles that explored traditional Japanese games, offering a digital version of a classic pastime right on your television. This was before the console's library exploded with sprawling RPGs and complex platformers; it filled a specific, quiet niche for players looking for something thoughtful.
You control the cursor, selecting and discarding tiles from a hand with the goal of forming a complete winning combination before your virtual opponent does. The core loop involves studying the board, deciding which tiles to keep for potential sequences or triplets, and carefully watching the discards to guess what your opponent is collecting. The game moves at a deliberate, patient pace, and the computer opponent provides a consistent challenge that pushes you to think several steps ahead. It feels like a calm but focused mental exercise each time you sit down to play a round.
