Shodani Nintei - Shodan Pro Mahjong is one of those deep-cut SNES mahjong sims that feels like it was made for serious players. The moment you boot it up, you're hit with that classic 90s Japanese UI—dense menus, kanji everywhere, and no hand-holding. If you're not already familiar with riichi rules, good luck figuring out what's happening.
But once you get past the initial confusion, there's something satisfying about the way it plays. The tile physics have that slightly chunky SNES feel, and the AI opponents actually put up a fight. I lost my first few matches embarrassingly fast before realizing you can't just wing it—you gotta pay attention to discards and wait for the right moment to call riichi. The music's this weird mix of traditional shamisen and synth that somehow works.
Definitely not for casual players, but if you're into mahjong or just love digging into obscure retro games, it's a neat time capsule. Just don't expect an English patch.
