About Shodan Morita Shougi
Shodan Morita Shougi came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, published by Random House. It was part of that early wave of SNES titles that explored traditional Japanese games, offering a digital version of shogi for a home console audience. This was a time when finding a dedicated shogi simulator outside of Japan was uncommon, making it a specific kind of find for strategy players.
You take on the role of a shogi player, moving your pieces across the board to capture your opponent's king. The main objective is to win each match, progressing through a series of increasingly difficult computer opponents. Key mechanics include a clear tutorial for learning piece movements and the ability to promote your pieces once they cross into the opponent's territory; you can also drop captured pieces back onto the board as your own, which completely changes your tactical options. The game starts simply but the computer's play becomes sharply defensive and calculating, forcing you to think several moves ahead. It feels like a quiet, focused battle of wits where every decision carries weight.
