About Shin Shougi Club (japan)
Shin Shougi Club came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, published by Hect. It was part of that late SNES era where you saw a lot of specialized Japanese titles that never left the country. This one is entirely about shogi, the Japanese chess variant, so it sits firmly in the strategy and simulation corner of the library.
You play as a student aiming to become the best in your school's shogi club. The main goal is to win matches against increasingly skilled opponents, moving up the ranks. Between matches, you navigate the school, talk to other club members to get advice, and sometimes face timed puzzle challenges where you must complete a specific shogi tactic. The game expects you to already know shogi rules; it does not hold your hand with tutorials. Pacing is deliberate, focused on thoughtful play rather than action. The feeling is one of quiet concentration, like studying a complex puzzle until the solution clicks into place.
