Shin Megami Tensei If... is one of those weird, moody SNES RPGs that never made it outside Japan—which is a shame, because it’s got this eerie high school horror vibe going on. You start off as a regular student until some power-tripping classmate opens portals to demon realms (because of course they do), and suddenly your school’s hallways are crawling with monsters. The usual SMT demon negotiation and fusion stuff is here, but the setting makes it feel way more personal—like, you’re recruiting demons to fight your way through the gym or the rooftop instead of some generic dungeon.
It’s janky in that classic ‘90s Megaten way, but there’s something about the atmosphere that sticks with you. The PS1 remake cleaned up some of the rough edges, but the SNES version has that grimy charm. If you’ve played later Persona games, it’s wild to see where some of the school-life-meets-supernatural stuff started.
