Shaq Fu was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994 by Delphine Software International. It appeared during a period when the SNES library was filled with fighting games, but this one stood apart by featuring a real life basketball star in a martial arts fantasy. The premise was unusual, placing a celebrity into a genre typically reserved for original characters or established franchises.
You control Shaquille O'Neal, navigating him through side scrolling streets and otherworldly portals. Your main goal is to rescue a boy named Nezu from a parallel dimension by fighting a series of antagonists. The gameplay alternates between exploring small areas screen by screen and engaging in one on one fighting game style battles. You punch, kick, and use special moves to deplete your opponent's health bar. The pacing can feel uneven, shifting abruptly from exploration to combat, and the difficulty is often unforgiving due to stiff controls and aggressive enemy patterns. Playing it feels like a strange experiment that never quite finds its footing.
