About Shanghai Iii (japan)
Shanghai III was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995 by Sunsoft. It arrived late in the SNES lifecycle, a time when many developers were pushing the hardware with complex action games. This title offered a different kind of challenge, a thoughtful puzzle experience built around the classic mahjong solitaire concept.
You control a cursor to select and remove matching pairs of mahjong tiles from a multi-layered layout. The main objective is to clear the entire board. The game introduces several mechanics to keep things interesting; you can shuffle the remaining tiles if you get stuck, and some layouts include special tiles that must be cleared in a specific order. The pacing is deliberate, requiring you to plan several moves ahead, and the difficulty ramps up significantly in the later, more intricate puzzles. It feels like untangling a knot with your eyes, a quiet test of observation and foresight.
