Shadowrun for the Super Nintendo came out in 1993 from developer Beam Software. It was a time when the SNES library was full of ambitious, complex games that tried to do more than just entertain for an afternoon. This one definitely fit that description, dropping you into a gritty, futuristic Tokyo with a mix of technology and magic that felt different from anything else on the console.

You control a mercenary named Jake Armitage, who starts the game with amnesia after an assassination attempt. Your main goal is to uncover who wants you dead and why, which involves exploring the city from a top-down perspective, screen by screen. You talk to a lot of shady characters in the shadows, gathering clues and taking on jobs for money. The signature mechanics include real-time combat with firearms and magic, and the ability to jack into the Matrix, a separate cyberspace realm where you fight ICE programs to hack data. The pacing is deliberate; you spend a lot of time reading dialogue and figuring out where to go next, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you wander into the wrong area unprepared. It feels like piecing together a dangerous puzzle where every conversation and every credit earned matters.
