About Sgt. Saunders' Combat! (japan)
I first played Sgt. Saunders' Combat! on the Super Nintendo back in 1995. It was published by ASCII Corporation, and it felt like a product of its time, a straightforward action game released late in the SNES's life. It was based on the old Combat! TV series, which gave it a certain novelty, but it stood on its own as a simple, no-fuss shooter.
You control Sergeant Saunders, moving him through a series of side-scrolling levels. Your main goal is to fight through enemy soldiers and complete missions, which usually involve reaching the end of a stage or eliminating all hostiles. The gameplay is built on run-and-gun action; you jump over pits, shoot Nazis with your rifle, and sometimes use grenades to clear out groups. The levels are linear, screen by screen, and the pacing is quick, though the enemy placement can make some sections surprisingly difficult. It feels like a basic but competent arcade-style challenge from that era.
