Secret of the Stars came out for the Super Nintendo in 1993, developed by Tecmo. It was one of many role playing games on the system that tried to capture the feel of exploring a large world, though it didn't get much attention at the time. You play as a young hero named Aeon, who discovers he is the chosen one destined to protect the world from an ancient evil. The story sends you on a journey across continents to gather the power needed to confront this threat.

You control Aeon directly, moving screen by screen through fields, towns, and dungeons. A key feature is that you can recruit additional characters to form a second party; you switch between controlling your main group and this support team to solve puzzles, often needing both groups to press switches in separate dungeons simultaneously. Combat is turn based, triggered by random encounters on the map, where you input commands for each party member to attack, use magic, or items. The main goal involves traveling to five towers to collect magical orbs, which are essential for progressing the story. The pacing is slow, partly due to a high encounter rate and some repetitive backtracking. Playing it feels like a methodical, sometimes plodding, trek through a very traditional RPG structure.
