About Secret Of Evermore
Secret of Evermore came out in 1995 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Square. It was part of that later wave of SNES RPGs, a time when developers were experimenting more with the hardware and trying new things beyond the standard fantasy setting. This one always stood out to me because it felt a bit different from the other games Square was known for at the time.
You control a boy and his shape-shifting dog, traveling through distinct time periods like prehistoric jungles, ancient Egypt, and a futuristic city. Your main goal is to find a way back home after being transported to the world of Evermore. The gameplay involves exploring areas screen by screen, fighting monsters in real-time with a sword or a crossbow, and delving into multi-level dungeons. One of its signature mechanics is the alchemy system, where you collect ingredients to cast spells instead of using traditional magic. The pacing can be deliberate, and some of the boss fights require careful pattern recognition. Playing it feels like a solitary, slightly strange journey where you're always figuring things out for yourself.
