About Second Front: Germany Turns East
Second Front: Germany Turns East is a turn-based strategy game released in 1990 for MS-DOS. Developed and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc., it is a historical World War II simulation focusing on the Eastern Front. The game presents a top-down, division-level view of the conflict, with the strategic map covering the theater from Berlin to Stalingrad.
Players assume the role of supreme commander for either the Axis or Soviet forces, directing over 150 German and 200 Soviet divisions. The core gameplay involves issuing strategic orders at the corps level, managing the movement and combat of units composed of multiple divisions. Players control air missions, oversee the production of war materials, and can transfer individual divisions between corps. Progression occurs through weekly turns on a hex-based map where each hex represents 20 miles, with scenarios spanning from 1941 to 1942.
The game offers several scenarios, including two that utilize the full strategic map and two more limited in geographic scope. Players can compete against a computer opponent or another human in a two-player mode. Victory is determined by meeting specific scenario objectives within a set number of turns, simulating the operational challenges faced by historical commanders during this campaign.
