Romancing SaGa came out for the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Square. It was part of that wave of ambitious Japanese role playing games that tried to do something different with the console's capabilities, moving beyond the straightforward fantasy stories that were common at the time.

You pick one of eight main characters and guide them across a world map, exploring towns and dungeons screen by screen. Your goal is to build your hero's reputation by completing quests and battling monsters. The combat uses a turn based system where your weapons, like swords or bows, can randomly unlock new techniques during a fight. The game is known for its open structure; you can wander into areas with enemies far too strong for you, and the story progresses based on a hidden event counter. This makes the pacing unpredictable and the difficulty quite steep if you are not careful. Playing it feels like charting your own course through a world that does not wait for you to catch up.
